Lightbulb Newbee

I have been looking for new hobby. Was a pineneedle basket weaver for 12 years. Moved to southern Arizona where pine needles are scarce. But have plenty of mesquite. Will need plenty of tutorials to reach the level in carving I was at in basket weaving I had won some national juried show recognition.

Hello and welcome to the WCI Board Larsyn, you will be able to find anything ya could ever need here on the board and if it is not posted just ask. Remember there is no such thing as a stupid question the only stupid ones are the ones never asked. I wouldn't use mesquite as a beginer try and get some basswood or butternut, ya might want to look around on here (in the galleries or the WIP section or any section) and see what type of carving ya want to do that or check out some books.

Hello and welcome, Larsyn. It's nice to greet an artist here. There are lots of talented people here and everyone is willing to help others new or old to carving.

Mesquite is a very hard wood and although it can be carved, it usually requires power tool. Try to find a local club and see if any of the members will give you some wood to begin with. Otherwise, you might want to buy some basswood from one of the many suppliers.

I saw you baskets. Very beautiful work.

Hi Larsyn, welcome I love pine needle baskets. I did a pine needle weaving around a gourd rim, and enjoyed the process. Carving is a wonderful hobby and profession we have a lot of knowledgable folks on this Message Board. What do you think you would like to learn to carve? You certainly should be able to get some idea here.
Again Welcome,
Kathy
