Hi all. I'm a complete newb to the woodcarving thing. I've always told my wife that I wanted to "whittle". Well, I finally decided to look into it and found this website which is full of great information. I really have no idea where to start or really even how. Maybe some of you guys could direct me to a few good threads on knive selection and maybe some projects that would be good for a beginner. Thanks and I look forward to spending more time on these boards and absorbing the years of experience and knowledge available to me.

Hello and welcome, AcesFull. It's nice to have you here with us. Just pick up a pocket knife, an inexpensive carving knife or even a box cutter. If you're just going to whittle, any wood you've got will do. When you get serious, you can look for a local carving club, better tools and good carving wood.

Yea, I already have a little Buck knife with 3 blades that need a little sharpening. From what I've read, you can pretty much use anything, although there are definitely some specific tools you would want to purchase if you got deep into the hobby. All I plan on doing is "whittling" I guess. I'm taking my wife and kids out to Sequoia National Forest on a 4 day camping trip and thought it would be a good opportunity for me to get started. Something to do while sttin' around the fire. |

AcesFull, you have come to the right place. There are lots of knowledgeable folk here to help you out along the way. Just don't get too carried away...leave a few of those sequoia standing!
