Default New to WCI

I've been carving for a couple of years. We spend the winter in the desert and a friend started a carving group in our park. Started off with 3 or 4 and now is up to 16 members! Great bunch of guys! Yesterday we went to the Ramona Country Carvers Woodcarving Show in San Jacinto, CA. Lots of great work and many bought tools and wood. I have carved a golfer in basswood and have started another. This year we were introduced to cottonwood bark carving. So far, it has been my favorite media. Now that I've finished my first piece I'm trying to decide the best way to finish it. I bought Deft Clear Wood Finish, satin, in the green can. But, I'm not sure that is the best way to go. Considering Watco, MinWax, and neutral shoe polish. Any suggestions?

Welcome aboard and to the WCI Forum! I've had good results with the same Deft finish that you purchased but have only used it on caricatures carved from basswood... I'm sure other more experienced carvers will offer advice for your cottonwood bark creations soon. Sounds like you carving group in the park is a lot of fun...be sure and post a few photos of your latest carvings when you have an opportunity to share with us. Thanks!
