Default New thread

Hi everyone,

We've been having quite a few members join lately, so I thought I'd start this new section! The way I envision it: everyone on the board start a thread with their name on it and explain who they are, what they do, carve, etc. That way new people can get to know us all...
I'll start mine tomorrow, though!

Bob

Well done Bob, this is a great idea! Gives all our members a chance to tell us a bit more about themselves than what their profiles can provide, who they are, what they do, that sort of thing.

Great idea there Bob---for new members. Even though it is a bit redundant, it will give those that like to talk about themselves a new vent. It will also give those that are quiet more to read and wonder about. I believe that you have launched the most popular thread - by far. I hope that we are able to find the new members.

This is a fantastic idea Bob. I have already posted a short bio. I do have one change I would like to see. Would it be possible to alphabatize this bunch of threads? That way, when a reply is made to a thread, we could look up the bio of the person doing the posting. I think we would learn a lot more about one another.

my name is Ed Miller,i began carving in 1999.My first try was at chip carving then gave caricatures a try. Later i did some relief carving. Going to try my hand at birds next. Enjoy reading the good advice of the ones who contribute to this forum. Not knowing how to work the fine parts of the computer i have so much to learn but will in time. To end with a question, how do you go about determining where to put shadows and and highlights . DO you create shadow by adding black to the original color and white to get a highlight.

Hello Ed,
I'll add my two cents by saying that I rarely use black or white by themselves and I rarely use them to change a color to make it darker or lighter for highlights or lowlights(shadows). I use ultramarine blue to make shadows that I want to look "cooler" and burnt umber if I want the shadow to look warmer (depending on the original color I've painted the carving.) If I've mixed my own color, say...green, from black and yellow, then I might use more black to get a darker hue of the green, or less black to get a lighter shade to highlighting.

Another instance was I used a very diluted ultramarine blue to put slight shadows in the "valleys" of off-white hair (santa) to give a dimension.

You just have to be careful with using white because it often muddies the original color.

These are just my experience. Other folks may have different views.

I did a thread like this back when I joined , so when you have it all going move it in with them.
