Default New to the site

Hi there!
I'm just starting to carve. I did a little in college, and I loved it. Now I want to get into it more and start making some nice pieces for my house. I want to start off small, with small bowls, vases, etc...
Anyone know of any good local shops for wood in the Monmouth County area of New Jersey?

I'm looking forward to start carving again!

-John

Sorry, I'm on the other side of the country, so I don't know of any local shops. But I did want to welcome you to the board. So, "welcome to the board!" I'm sure someone here will be able to point you in the right direction, if not there are always online sources for tools and materials. Hope you enjoy getting back into carving. I can't think of a better way to spend some leisure time.

Thanks for the welcome! Yeah, I'm looking forward to it! I'm going to get some tools today and get started on some simple stuff just to get back into the swing of things.

John, welcome to the forum. I am so glad you wont to start carving. sounds like you need some things to start carving on. bowls, vases. etc. gosh I am new also. so I don't really know where you can find carving things to carve on. but I do know of some sorces to buy wood. maybe, if you like the lathe, you can make some bowls and vases. or even scroll them to that shape. them carve them. that would be a great thing to have a place to buy things to carve on. like that. Evie. hear is a source for carving bass wood.

Welcome to the forum, John.

Go to Google, type in "hardwood lumber monmouth NJ" and you'll find lots of hardwood. Many specialize in hardwood moldings, but this one Monteath Moulding Corp. - J.H. Monteath LLC seems to have a good supply of speciality lumber...

Thanks for all the welcomes and tips! I just found some of my old tools from college, but I'm going to need some more. What are the best and cheapest tools? I'd like to create anywhere from little figurines to bowls and vases up to 24" wide and high.

Thanks for any help!
