Hey there scarfingers! It's nice to here from others across the country. I appreciate your response. I hope to have a couple pictures in the near future. I do need to get more equipment though to finish a couple of projects. Hope to talk to you again soon.

Hi there Donna T. This is actually the 2nd time I typed this. Having trouble trying to figure this system out. If you get two responses so be it. Anyways I also have a son living in Brattleboro. My first carving (sunfish) is 3/4 finished. I have mounted it on a piece of driftwood I found on a fishing trip in Canada. I really made it difficult for my 1st as it was hard oak. Too bad I'm going to paint over it. Do you find that most carvers use the airbrush vs brush?

Hi Mikeg; Nice to hear from a Vermonter. I didn't know we had a local group. I will definitely see if I can get signed up with Green Mountain Wood Carvers. Thanks for your direction on the power tools. There seems to be alot of neat stuff I'll be picking up now that I'm online. Thanks again for your help.

Hey there RussL; Small world isn't it. I actually live just 1 mile from the fish access at Salem Lake and fish there for the walleye quite often. My walleye that I'm currently carving is a replica from a fish caught in Salem (9 1/2 lbs). It's alot of work, but I won't give up on finishing it. Keep in tough and thanks again for welcoming me.

Hi Kathy! Wow all the way from Arizona. That's neat! Thanks for responding. I took notes on your recommendations. I currently do not use a dust collector, but I have plans and materials ready to build one (hopefully sooner than later). Hope to talk to you soon - later.

Hi Susieq! Thanks for responding. It's really neat to talk to other carvers from so far away. There really is a ton of material to learn from here and it really will be a big help to talk to other carvers when I get stuck. Hope to talk again soon.

Hi Eddy - Thanks for responding. St Johnsbury is just down the road from here (30 miles). I'll follow your direction and do some studying. It appears I'll have plenty of great reference material here. Hope to talk to you soon.

Well, Papawhip, that depends...
You asked if most fish carvers use airbrushes to paint instead of doing it by hand...and it depends on what "look" they're after. The airbrush, once mastered, can give you a very professional look. In our club, some of the oldest guys had trouble using the airbrush--their old fingers just weren't as agile as needed to work the trigger effectively. And if you don't use a good quality of paint, it be a challenge.

I don't do fish very often any more, but I got a basic set of airbrush paints from a taxadermy supply--they had it for taxadermy OR wood projects--and included paint charts for several kinds of fish.

If I was carving a fish out of oak, I would definitely be using power. Yikes but that's hard wood to start with!!!
