Hello Woodcarvers,
I'm new to this site, but have been carving and whittling for sixty years or more. I am retired and live in the mountains of California. Many of my recent carvings are reliefs based on the designs of M. C. Escher. I do all of my work with hand tools - chisels, gouges, veiners, etc. I have done a lot of whittling with a pocket knife.
When I get more familiar with this site I may post some photos of my carvings.
Phil

Welcome, Phil!

If you're doing Escher in 3D, I'd sure like to see this one.

Yes, it would be an interesting challenge as a relief (3D) woodcarving. I have done some other "impossible" figures. I have a wood inlay (intarzia) version of Escher's "Belvedere" done by a young artist in Italy.

Pallin, those are some very interesting and well done carvings! It would indeed be an absolute challenge to put that Escher drawing that Claude showed, into relief. That would be putting a 2D misrepresentation of perspective (which is a challenge in itself) into a 3D outlet......not sure that could be done. It may be possible to work that in an intarsia piece as that does not require any depth changes on the surface. It could also be done with pyrography, or even by single surface incising, as in the old woodcuts or reverse engravings.

I've even seen a successful photo somewhere of a 3D "twisted perspective" box that was actually constructed, but it was dependant on being photographed from one very specific point of view. Move the camera, and the whole effect collapsed.

Perhaps that perpetual waterfall could be constructed or carved in a similar manner......what a concept!

Indycarver.... I'm not sure you posted in the right spot. To get more folks to see your question you might want to try starting a new thread under new members.

To address your question you might want to check out these two URL's or just Google "woodcarving and Indiana."
