Default New in North Carolina (for now)

Good evening to all. My name is Charles and I decided (actually Wifey strongly suggested I take up a hobby so I didn't cause her to go insane. I was a Design Engineer and have been in this or similar line of work for about 20 years.

More later.

Hi and welcome..hard to go wrong taking up woodcarving. Just remember safety comes first...a carving glove, thumb guard and knife would be a good place to begin. We all were newbie's to woodcarving so if you need help just ask. What type of carving are you interested in learning?

Plenty of room on the forum here for designers and engineers...welcome to the forum!

Need a little challenge? How about carving something like this:

http://mysite.verizon.net/cfreaner/Bottlestopper.mov

The challenge part is that the head moves through 60 degree arc and the arm moves through 90 degree arc. Both are activated by a pull on the string, so the length of pull must be the same even though each moves through a different arc.

Claude (also an engineer...)

Thank you for the warm welcome. I apologize for the delay in posting this response but I have been busy trying to get our home in North Carolina on the market.

As far as what I am interested in carving, I think in the near term to concentrate on relief or chip carving. I also plan on trying other types of carving to see how good a fit it would be.

More later. Thank you all again.
