| | New-new-newbie Hi, all;
I am a real newbie! My new carving chisels are still in the box, so I will be looking for lots of help in the future. I have some experience in joinery and I have done some wood turning, so I'm not unfamiliar with wood, but carving will be an absolutely new experience for me.
Regards to all,

| | Re: New-new-newbie Well Ken, welcome aboard son! If you live in Dartmouth, NS, count yourself very lucky, there is a great supplier of wood in your neighbourhood, East Coast Hardwood Specialty in Burnside. They have some of the nicest carving woods you'll ever want to find, and are really nice folks to deal with. So pick out a piece of Basswood or Butternut or even Mahogany and start carving over the Christmas Holidays.

| | Re: New-new-newbie Many thanks to all who replied to my first post.
For squbrigg: I am indeed in Dartmouth, NS, and I know East Coast in Burnside well. For your info, there is another supplier just opened in Bedford -- Halifax Specialty Hardwood -- good quality, better prices. As you seem to have guessed, I am ex-RCN. I retired in 1980 after almost thirty years of service.
I have been working on an old sea Captain about four inches tall, using only a jack-knife and a few "non-carving" chisels. The going is slow, but I have no deadlines. ,
