| | New Member looking for starting advice I would like to pick up carving, but don't know where to start. My background is finish carpentry-mainly cabinetry. So I was hoping some of you could point me in the direction of how/where to begin. I haven't bought any tools or books yet because I wanted to make sure I am going in the right direction before I do anything. The second question was that I was just curious how solid wood cairs get the butt mold in them. If you can help me out that would be great!
Thank you |

| | Re: New Member looking for starting advice Welcome! I believe a good drawknife and a spokeshave would be the tools for contouring the seat portion of a chair. http://www.no-wood-unturned.com/chairmaking.html |

| | Re: New Member looking for starting advice Welcome, as to where to start, well there is one tried and true way-for sure. Find a local carving group, and join them. You will find that woodcarvers are the most sharing and helpfull folks around. And there's nothing like sitting with an experienced and accomplished carver and receiving that personal help and guidance. TOM H |

| | Re: New Member looking for starting advice I would suggest to pick up a carving knife and one small gouge and try to whittle a small piece of bass wood into a santa or cowboy or something simple to see if you are going to like doing it. I have the same problem you have with carpentry I cant put two pieces of wood together I would love to be able to but it never works for me so I will stick with carving.
