Hi, I signed up for the forum back in 2005 and forgot about it. I went on this week to look around and found I was already signed up. I live in Sacramento, Ca. and belong to the Capital Wood Carvers group. And also he Northern California RV Carvers. I carve mostly Cottonwood bark. Of which I find most of it along the Sacramento River washed down from floods. It don't have the thickness of the cold country bark but its free. I have found it up to 2 and 3/4 inches thick. I'm a advanced carver, and when I enter in a carving show I think how nice it was to be a novice. I started carving in 2003 at age 65. I had messed around with carving signs in years past, but that was it. My problem is I'm not an artist, I cant see what I want in the life forms or landscape. I was a building contractor and I have a prospective of structures so I do castles and houses in fantasy which I can see in my minds eye. I wish I were gifted with the ability to see animals, figures, landscape ect. I will be looking here more, I may be able to get help with what I need to do. In reading thru here I see there is a lot of opportunities to help me with my carving. I'm a motorcycle rider also. Have a good day folks. Kcubal my userid is my last name and initials backwards, like labuck=kcubal. Wish you all the best. kcubal

Hello, Lon and welcome. I think you will like it here and glad you found your way back.
Hubby and I lived in Northern California before moving to Arizona. I'm very familar with Sacramento and the Delta (had a boat). I've seen some of the excellent work of the Capital Wood Carver's in Chip Chats Magazine.
I really like cottonwood too, and have created some pieces from it. I have the feeling that we have the same species of cottonwood in common. Here it is called Fremont Cottonwood and it's range also cover's California. I haven't actually carved with the bark only. My carvings are from the root and limbs. But, I would like to try my hand at carving the bark also. Like you, I also collect my Cottonwood from the banks of washes and rivers. Maybe you can give me/us some tips on carving Cottonwood bark, and sure would like to see some of your carvings.
Here is a helpful link on uploading images to WCI message board forums and gallery. Posting Photos
