| | New member in Kansas Good morning everyone:
Just like some of the other new members, I have been lurking and looking at the board for a couple of months. I have been impressed with the knowledge and courtesy of the members!
I live in Great Bend, KS, which is almost dead center in the middle of the state. I grew up on a farm near Russell, KS, (home of Bob Dole), and as most farm boys did, always had a pocket knife with me. Was constantly carving on something, mostly turning dried sunflower stalks into arrows or spears!
The carving bug hit me when we made a trip to Estes Park, CO, and I visited Mountain Woodcarvers and bought Jack Price' book, Carving Compact Characters. I have been addicted ever since. My father in law who is a master woodworker, noticed my interest, and bought me a set of carving tools for a Christmas present in 1998 and I jumped in with both feet.
I carve caricatures, santas and snowmen. I am trying to develop my own style, but I have taken a class with Mike Shipley, and have kind of developed an Ozark style in my caricatures and santas.
I am a banker by trade, and my job supports my carving and hunting addictions. I have a very supportive wife, but unfortunately I can't make chips in the house yet!
Take care for now,

It appears that your "style" and mine are similar. I refer to myself as a miniature caricature carver. I have Mr. Price's books and really developed some of my techniques from his ideas. I really like the range that he has with his characters. My faces are more in line with Pete LeClair as far as style however.
I too carve larger items, such as santas and caricatures, but really enjoy carving items less than 2".
Glad to have you here. |

Great Bend has some excellent hunting around there. Yes, this addiction can be exspensive to say the least but, the rewards are tremendous. Come often with your question as there is a wealth of information here.
I am from SEKansas at the Kansas/Oklahoma Border on highway 75. Can't get must more south in Kansas than what this little town of Caney is.
Some really great carvers on here and I hope one day to be half as good as they are. |

| | Re: New member in Kansas Mitchell,
Thanks for the reply. I actually picked up Jack Price' book due to the face carving tutorial in it. That was before I heard of Pete LeClair and the members of the CCA that have written books.
Of late, I just purchased Marv Kaisersatt's new book on Creating Caricature Heads.
My biggest head scratcher is to get the body proportions right with the heads. I guess I will just have to jump in, carve and see what looks right! |

| | Re: New member in Kansas Kenny,
The hunting around here has been awesome this year! Plenty of pheasants, quail, and although I am not a waterfowler, the goose and duck hunting has been tremendous, too.
Unfortunately, the infamous whooping crane incident only happened about 15 miles southeast of town. Kind of gives sportsmen a bad image when stuff like this happens. I am a Hunter Ed instructor, and we are lobbying to have the Federal Judge in the case give community service to be served in Hunter Ed classes as examples of 'what not to do.'

when carving caricatures the head can be alittle bigger than the body it doesnt have to be the correct size, thats part of caricature carving is to exagerate parts of the body as long as it isnt overly big i think it should be okay.
oh i forgot welcome to the board

| | Re: New member in Kansas We'll take the "dimensions" discussion to the Caricature section. It'll make a good topic. |

| | Re: New member in Kansas Welcome aboard Tim!
I'm a novice carver as well. I too love Jack Price's book. It allowed me to carve something recognizable in just a few hours. I say "just" a few hours but I've seen guys who can knock one out in under 1/2 an hour.
I bought his pattern book as well. It's just patterns but it helps give ideas. I bought some 1x1x6 and 1x1x3 basswood on ebay and have enough there for hundreds of little figures.
Again, welcome aboard!
