Have not carved for about 10 years. When I carved I done it as a hobbie it relaxed me. Done a few bird and ducks. I have things I started 15 years ago that need to be finished, I have a crappie that I want to finish I quit it when I came to the head and still have not got a clue as to how to finish it. I need to put scales on it also there is quite a bit of work to do on it. I'm a retired Chrysler worker in Toledo Ohio. Id love to get carving again maby I will join a club if I can find one in the area.

Hello Jeep and welcome to the WCI Forum! Lots of very talented wood carvers that specialize in fish here on the forum. Have you checked out the department on the forum dealing with animal and fish carving? Some great creations there that may give you some ideas and if you still have questions, post'em and I'm sure one of the more experienced wood carvers here will be more than happy to help you out... Again welcome to the forum and save carving to you!

Welcome Jeep Geek,
Glad you've returned to carving. I doubt there's any carver alive who doesn't have a "round tuit" stash...things waiting for you to get around to it again and finish it. Sometimes I get to a point that I'm not sure what to do next, and it gets put aside until inspiration hits and I figure out the next step.

I'm in the process of doing 2-3 crappie--having finished one this summer already. Having a good book on fish carving is a great help. I think mine is called "freshwater fish" and it has four or so different species with patterns and step by step hints.

If you're going to do fish, I'd recommend fish scale wood burning tips, plus one "centerline" tip. For 20 years, I have used a Colwood Cub woodburner that's relatively inexpensive, and our carving club has a replacable tip handle and four fish scale tips....small, med, large. One of the nice things about our carving club is that anyone who wants to make a fish can check out the burner and tips for two weeks. That way--no one has to buy the individual tips--and anyone can try their hand at fish without the investment.

I power carve all my fish and airbrush the paint. I go to a taxidermy suppy to get my paint charts and paint. Hope that helps. Be sure to check out old posting in the section on animals and fish and you'll find lots of previous discussion.

Good Luck and welcome to the forum.
