Welcome to the forum, Bob!
I know of two suppliers of Lime (linden, basswood) in the UK, which should be a good wood for your purpose.
Wood & Wood Carving Tools, Limewood Batons, Kirschen Wood Carving Tool Set, Leather Apron, Arkansas Smoothing Stone, Japanese Plywood, Mallet, Pfeil Scorp

Reid Timber woodturning and Carving blocks, Glasgow Scotland

There are quite a few carvers from the UK here on the forum, so one of them may have additional suppliers for you.

Claude
