| | New Member I started back in the 1970's and quit.Just starting again in this great hobby and just found this site and will read it a lot from now on.
Does anyone have a suggestion on what tools to start with? I know everyone has there favorite brand, but what should I start with? Thanks for any help that is given.

| | Re: New Member You'll get a lot of answers to that question. I personally think it depends on the style you carve in. Once you decide on a style to start with buy a selection of tools for that style, after handling them to check for comfort, and start from there. |

| | Re: New Member Welcome to the board. Kitaye is right, the tools will depend on what type of carving you pursue. There have been many threads addressing the tool question, I would start there.

| | Re: New Member Welcome Wolfdog,
It is a great hobby/craft/art. Join the club - collect more tools than you will ever use. Ask them all. They all have tools stacked everywhere that they have not used in years. They all have a great small selection that they wouldn't part with for the world. But, they only got there because they tried all kinds of tools and gadgets before they found what fit their hand, their style, their taste, their pocketbook. Have fun learning and experimenting.

| | Re: New Member Hi, first of all welcome and I love your Avatar, is that your drawing? It's beautiful work....second a good carving knife, carving glove (or fisherman's glove) thumb guard (vet wrap works great). www.littleshavers.com and www.woodcarverswarehouse.com both have a good range of tools even beginner sets. Also, I like www.woodcarverssupply.com I started with a good bench knife, glove and thumb guard and added tools as I needed them for certain carvings. I do relief, and carving in the round. I know there are other's here who can give you some additional idea's.
