| | Re: new member Hello PF - You're right about getting (needing) a hobby in retirement and woodcarving is an excellent choice - from the perspective of many of us. It doesn't have to cost much to get started - I started out with a $35.00 knife and some purchased basswood. I too started out as a retirement hobby and was introduced to it by a friend who has since passed on. I've been at it for a half dozen years, and while I'm not particularly talented, family graciously accept some of my work and I take real enjoyment in carving personalized walking sticks for friends - in any event, carving is most relaxing and enjoyable. Visit some woodworking stores in your area - the library is an excellent resource for some reference material and as you get started and have questions you will find lots of help from this forum. Good luck - let us know when you get started and welcome to a wonderful hobby......Johnny |

| | Re: new member Welcome aboard PF. If you enjoy drawing, it will help your carving. Drawing skills really help when you are planning out carvings, essential when you do relief carving. Carving of any kind is a real pleasure to do and great relaxation.

| | Re: new member Welcome PF.....Carving is a lot of fun and releases much creativity. Be sure to learn carving while wearing a glove. My other suggestion would be to attend a local carving club in your area, all of them encourage guests and begginners, look in the upper right hand corner of this message board site has a link to other wood carving sites, click on club search and check your state. Again welcome and have fun. Bill | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
