Default New Kid On The Wood Block

Hey All, Boy am I glad I stumbled onto this site. I have had a interest in wood carving for many years, but have not persued it. I have always been facinated by the wood spirits, the expressions, the flowing lines of the features, etc. The carvings that you guys do are fantastic. It has made me want to get out my old knives, which I made myself when I was carving some wood signs, many years ago, and give it a try. The tutorials are very helpful but can anyone tell where I can find some instructions from start to finish, ie; finding wood, preparing the wood for carving, type of mounting vises for mounting the piece if necessary, etc., etc. If I can produce anything a 10th as good as some of the pieces I've seen here, I'll be happy.
I've attached photos of a few of the pieces I did many years ago. They are the first and only things I ever attempted and due to changing times, I did not continue with my efforts. Thanks for reading and any suggestions would be very much appreciated.

Thanks Greg. I've been going through the tutorial, some several times. I guess the best thing is to just jump in and start.

Thanks for the kind words Cliff. I would love to show some more of my carvings but that is just about all of them. The chip carving board was my first and last attempt at chip carving and the others were done while I had some slow time in my business. Wish I'd continued. I might be almost as good as you guys by now.

Greetings and salutations! Your work looks great. You need to get back into the making chips!

I hopeyou don't really mean that when you say the chipped piece was your first and last. It is beautiful. You did a great job from what I can tell.

Oh, welcome.
