Hello to all, I'm the new kid on the block and just want to say hello to everyone! I have a new toy...... Mr. Dremel, only he doesn't seem to be very friendly. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to make him a bit more user friendly? I'm not sure what all the cutters, burrs, grinding stones, etc do. What is the best way to start. Hope to hear from anyone/someone soon! |

Thank you for responding. After taking the dremel out of the box, I tried using the different bits that came with it (this was a gift). I have never worked with wood before, other than dusting and waxing furniture. I would like to begin carving wood, but it seems that most books are geared to hand carving. I am trying to figure out what dremel bits/tools I should use to say... duplicate the results of goughes, etc. Do you have any suggestions or books you could recommend. And thank you for responding; you are the first person who has contacted me!

Do you have a flexible shaft for your dremel?

Your Welcome My advice would be to go to the power carving section and look at all the different post then any questions that you have, just post them there and you will get a response from someone who knows a lot more than I do. I would also go to the wood craft site and see what they offer as far as bits for a Dremel or other power carving tools. You will find that any questions you have will be answered by many different people with many different ideas. I'm sorry I cant be more of a help, but just stick around you will get the answers you want in short time. Kevin

Hello, and yes, I do have the flexible shaft. I bought a "chuck" to go with it, as I really got tired of changing the collets along with the bits. Still have no clue as to what does what! Thanks for responding.

What is it that you are interested in carving? Do you want to power carve to accent handcarvings, or do you want to use the dremel exclusively? I was signed up to take an "eggimal" class at my nearby carving store which used power carving to carve animals out of wooden eggs. Unfortunately, I was the only one to sign up, so the class was canceled. I wouldn't call myself a power-carver...I've played around with it, but that was the whole reason I wanted to take the class was to learn the basics.

Hi Rainbird. Try the Frank Russel books on power carving. You can find them on Amazon. He explains what burrs to use and how to use them.

Welcome Rainbird! I don't know much about power carving.....but I do know that those burrs will remove hide just as quickly as they remove wood. So be careful.
