Hi All,

I look forward to learning more about carving. Life-long woodworker, here, but very little carving. 30 yrs ago, I took several carving classes, but haven't done any significant carving since then. I have 6 Pfeil chisels and a Solingen knife. I'm shopping Ebay for a few more chisels, as per recommendations from 4 books I recently purchased: Essential Woodcarving Techniques by Dick Onians; Woodcarving Course & Reference Manual and Woodcarving Tools, Materials & Equipment - Volumes 1&2 by Chris Pye.

I'm now disabled, so my normal woodshop activities (hobby) are not so accessible for me, anymore. Flickr: cedarsonny's Photostream . After retirement, I became a certified upholsterer, to compliment my woodworking hobby. There have been times when I've carved ball & claw feet, figured armrests/backrest and other small parts of furniture, as per repairs needed, but no major carving tasks, as I assume a carving project would entail.

I read several of your forum threads about stropping chisels. This is something I need to learn. Seems not too difficult. I've always kept my woodworking tools sharp, so that kind of task is not an issue for me. I suspect I have all the sharpening stones, etc. necessary, but I don't have a strop. Beyond this, I don't yet know what other questions I need to ask or concerns I need to address. I'm still reading the books and trying to get a feel and the mindset (*knowing your tools, specific names, etc.) for carving.

For a long time, I've had a carving project in mind: An eagle's head (profile), on a piece of cypress log about 7' tall, 5' wide, 20" thick (see Flickr images). I suspect I need to learn/re-learn some basics, and then some, before tackling this project, though.

Sonny

Welcome to the forum! We have had a lot of threads here about how to build a strop, how to use it, what compounds to use, etc. If you go up to the green bar above, click on Search, then enter "strop" into the search field, you find hundreds of posts with good info in them.
