| | New to Carving Good Morning all; Good Morning; I am new, very new to wood carving. It is something that I have always wished to do but just never got around to it. But last week, I bought a few basic supplies (after reading a post by 'Old Joe' here on what to buy ), wood, and a beginner’s book and carved my first litttle duck. Even looks like a duck. Let me tell you, I am hooked. My name is Arthur, but everyone calls me Doc, seeing I am a Psychologists. I am 57 years old and am really excited about begining to carve. I joined the National Woodcutters Association yesterday and was searching in Wood Carving Illustrated for a local organization, I live in North Miaim, Florida. I found several clubs in the Port Saint Lucy area but nothing closer to Miami. I would like to link up with a local woodcarving club for a few lessons and fellowship. I feel so blessed in having found this forum community and look foward to being a contributor. Any advice you could offer would be greatly appreciated. And any help in gettting in contact with a local club, carver or store would be sooo helpful. Thanks everyone, Best, Doc Best; Doc |

Welcome aboard Doc!! It seems to me you've taken off on the right foot. I'm sure you'll find a local carving club and I wish you the best. So do you have an idea of what type of carving you'd like to do? (could help us give you more info)... |

I am not really sure what type of carving i would like to do, but I do know that I would like to learn how to carve small figures and walking staffs. I hope you are right about finding a local carving club. i have done some searching on the web and have not found any yet. But i am persistent.
Thanks again for the welcome

Here's a link that may help: http://www.woodcarvingillustrated.com/clubs_AL_FL.htm
I'm not all that familiar with Florida geography, but there seem to be a lot of clubs down there...THen again, I'm kinda getting the feeling that our little community here is really turning into an international carving club! (at least I hope it is LOL).
If there is anything I can do to help in any way, give me a hollar!

You've come to the best place to learn. We have the best carvers here (me not being one of them). I've spent the last 20 years in your field of expertise. Carving is the best stress reliever (golf being the worst). I'm hooked on both but a carving hook is better than a golf hook. Welcome a aboard.

| | Re: New to Carving Welcome Doc....you will get about all the info you want right here....not to say having access to a carving club wouldn't be great! But in my case, no carving clubs within 4 hours of here...so WCI has to be it! check out your local library, maybe they have some carving books that will help.... |

| | Re: New to Carving Hi Doc Welcome to the group . I live in Boynton Beach. There are no clubs in this area I know of.There is a woman by the name Zack that does some teaching in the Woodcraft Store in Pompano Beach.I used to meet with a few fellows at her home..I have been carving for 20 yrs. Used to belong to the Long Island Woodcarvers in N.Y. before I moved here.7 yrs.ago.But I guess the distant is a bit too far from N. Miami.Good luck and stick with it.
