General help, from beginner to beginner:

-find out how to sharpen your tools really well
-buy a set that is suitable for what you want to carve
-get some good wood, for instance basswood (great carving wood for beginner and seasoned carver alike)
-set yourself a project that's easy enough, carve it as well as you can, and prepare to make two just in case. Make dry runs of parts of the project if you're at all unsure.
-I've found it a good idea to see what others have carved and how - and then make my own designs based on that.

Welcome aboard, it's a great hobby and profession!

hi Ricky have you bought any tools yet are what do you have to start with and if so what have you started to carve. you find out ever one will be happy to help if they can. this is a very good site and ever one will try and help with your questions. if you need a starter set rick at little shavers has a good little starter set I bought one befre I bought my flexcut tools and I still use them as I need them. one of my freinds that just passed away gave me a set to use after I joined are club when I frist started in fact I bought them just so I could put them up in my shop from his wife. I miss him very much a good freind is had to find . I should also tell you if you can find a local club it will befit you to joine as it give you a group to work with and helps you to keep working to get better and I can tell you that you will meet some great people. good luck.
