Default New to Carving

Hello,
I’m new to wood carving. My wife talked me into joining a carving group at our senior services center. With the exception of Al, who is a master carver, we are all neophytes. But very enthusiastic.
I’m now retired from the USMC and home building. Although my father was a carver, (he referred to the art as whittling.) I had never tried my hand at it. I assumed his whittling was a skill he possessed, but one that never made it to me. At my wife urging I desided to give it a try, no one could be more amaized than me when I discovered I could carve Santa’s, spoons and assorted caricatures that others could recognize.
In the few weeks since I was first introduced to wood carving I have spent much of my free time with bass wood and knives in my hand.

Semper Fi.
Thanks for your service.
Many of us, for whatever reason, take up carving later in life. For me it was to keep busy and stay out of trouble. The busy part is easy.
Welcome.
Bill K.
