Default New Carver needs help - Ohioweaver

I received a PM from a new carver in the Ohio area that is requesting some help. I have posted her message below.

I'm so new to carving I SQUEAK!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here it is in a nutshell: my late husband did scrollsaw work and relief carving using just hand tools/knives. I have RA and my hands work "sometimes" but they hurt alot if I put too much pressure/pushing. Hence, I just bought a Mastercaver set and a lapboard, apron and I'm ready! And scared to death!
I already know about the Carvers club in my area, unfortunately, they meet in the evenings and I can't drive at night (eyes) and besides, there parking is terrible (I have a big van), so I'm stuck at home. Next question:
isn't there anyone in my area (West of Cleveland) that you could put my e-mail address to and ask if they would make any housecalls? I promise, I will feed them and water them as if they were a relative and yes, pay them for gas and time! Is that an offer someone will accept? Let me know. Diane Marshall,

Hi Diane, Welcome to the forum!

I would suggest that you start by calling your local Senior Center! Many centers have small clubs that meet using the center as a home base ... quilting club, photography club, and carving clubs. Carving is a favoirte craft at my town's Senior Center and one of their largest groups.

You could ask if the seniors do have a carving club and who are the members of the club. They may offer you names and phone numbers right over the phone or take your name and number to pass onto some of the carvers. I would expect that there could be several carvers that would be delighted to come, meet you, and help you get started in carving. If you can't drive at night you might also ask if there is someone at the Senior Center that could pick you up and bring you to the meetings.

Good Luck ...

Susan

Maybe someone in the carving club could provide evening transportation to the club meetings. Check with the club. Never know til you ask. Wish she lived in this area. Would be glad to help out.

Diane,

Another thought would be to go to a carving show. They usually take place during the day. I know Dayton is having their Artistry in Wood Show in November...there are all kinds of retailers and carvers there--and I'm sure they would be glad to help you.

Cool Re: New Carver needs help - Ohioweaver

I belong to the Great Lakes Woodcarving club and I think there is a group of carvers that do get together during the day. We meet on the fourth Thursday of the month at night which I know does not work for you.

Hi_Ho Sliver,

Go to www.everythingdulcimer.com, they have plenty of dulcimer tabs there. I'm not sure if they are DAA or DAD. Maybe some of both. It's a great website and a lot of great people there. I'm still learning to play HD, on day to build a MD with some carving on the peghead and strum hollow.
