There are some threads here that address these things. Some people here are doing wonders with the $9.99 knife they bought 10 years ago. I bought a cheapo set five years ago and it's doing fine. I'm beginning to believe that practice with any tool makes you better at carving. So, I am now practicing more than ever! Joggernot

Welcome to the form. For knives I like Helvie.... as for chisels I like Pfeil tools. I hope you enjoy the site. Greg |

Hi, KOP! welcome! I carve wood spirits also. I started with some cheap carving tools, 30 or so dollars for 6. Got them at home depot or someplace like that. I still use them and like them. I've bought a couple Flexcut tools and Dockard micro carving tools.Love those too. Wear a good carving glove or 2. I use a fish fillet glove, with a SafeGrasp glove over that, don't rely on just a heavy leather glove like I did for protection. No glove is puncture and cut proof, just resistant. Hope you have nothing but great carving experiences. Lots of great people here to help you. Sharon
