Thumbs up new carver

Hello! I am new to this board. I would like to introduce myself. I have been carving for about a year on and off. Now that I have been out of work since June, I have had plenty of time to carve.
I have done some relife carving on a viking chair that I made I am planning to do a celtic knot on it as well.I think that I want to try doing chip carving as well. But I am not sure how to go about it.
I read on this forum that the seahorse whittler is a very good knife to use, so Iwent to the local Lowes and bought one today! The fifty dollar price tag was a bit much. But I used the change I have been saving .Boy those nickles and dime sure add up!
I hope to get a digital camera so that I can post some of my work here.
Thank you for letting me join this wonderful family.

Welcome aboard Justanick. This is the greatest board to be a member of and carving is the greatest hobby to be involved in. You are beginning on a wonderful journey in life by carving. There is no limit on what you can create, as you learn and progress you get more and more inspired. There are great woods out there to carve, great tools to carve with and you own immigination is your only limitation of the things that you can come up with to create. Carving is very good for the soul! Have fun and h a p p y carving.

Welcome! We're so glad to see you here. Jump in any time and ask questions or comment on a process you're familiar with already.

Good people are here--with some really good carving hints. Sorry about the "out of work since June" part--but golly, that ought to leave you lots of time to carve!

Come back soon!

If you want to chip carve, get the book "Chip Carving Techniques and Patterns" by Wayne Barton....read it and do exactly what he says, even tho it really feels awkward at first, you will be successful in your attempts and the awkwardness goes away after awhile and it just becomes second nature.....You can start with a chip knive and a stab knive...basically all you need plus a compass/divider, a ruler and some 4x4 inch 1/4 thick slabs of basswood to practice on....chipcarving is what started me in this rat ra.....errr, this wonderful hobby/avocation?/obsession LOL
