Hi Petal and welcome to the group.

I'm glad to hear you found someplace close to get some one-on-one information and help. The boards are a great place to get info and ideas but it seems so much easier to understand some one who is right next to you sometimes.

Hi Petal;
Yes, Merrickville's Wood-n-feathers is most likely the closest supplier of woodcarving tools etc., here's their web site url.

http://www.wood-n-feathers.com/home.asp

One other bit of info, Quinte Woodcarvers have a nice woodcarving show in Napanee at Loyalist College every year , here's the info on that;
Quinte Woodcarvers Show & Sale April 16th, 2005 from 9:30 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. at Loyalist College in Belleville, Ontario. For information call Gordon Stirling at 613 967 1937
There will be a number of vendors at this show as well as a competition, at least there has been in the past.

Petal, You came to the right place. You will have the chance to chat with some of the best female wood carvers I have ever seen and they are here right on this site. They are also very helpful to new comers.

Have not found one person on here to ever be anything but helpful and there are no stupid questions on here. Welcome and I hope you enjoy this place as much as I have, Mike

Welcome to the board!

I know just what you mean, about hardly being able to sleep and all. I've been woodcarving for almost a year and it's still very exciting to think what I'll be able to do in the years ahead! So many ideas dashing about.

Welcome Petal! I've been carving for 13 years and I still carve in my sleep. Well, ok - I dream about carving. I've never actually awakened with a knife and a piece of wood - yet! I do some great carving there, too. Sounds like you fit right in. Sandy

Welcome aboard Petal. It is wonderful to see such enthusiasm and passion for carving. Carving is a great way to relax and express yourself.......be it nature, nautical or comic relief......it is amaizing what you can do with a little wood, a sharp knife and some time. Enjoy.

Bob

Question Re: new carver

HI Ho thanks again for responding .It took me too long to figure out how to get back to the right place to reply.I was wondering does any one use a dremel tool?or the type that has the flex shaft attachment? cause I heard you can add a thing thats like a gouge to the end of it and carve with it.Plus some people say make your mallet and other say buy one that you can insert different weights in ?See what I mean so many questions.I called woodnfeathers today to check there open times and what I was looking for ,also asked would someone beable to answer question? They said yes the owner operator would be able to answer my questions.He doesn"t know what he's in for cause his ears will be ringing when I get done with him. Hope he's nice .Petal

Power carving uses a motor with a flexable shaft, like a Dremel or Foredom, with a hand piece at the end that burrs fit into. Burrs are the cutters, and they come in all shapes, sizes and types (rough carbide, medium carbide, fine carbide, then fine diamond and ruby and stone burrs.

There is also something called a recriprocating carver that works in conjunction with a flex-shaft unit, if fits on the end of the shaft (different hand piece) and holds bladed instead of burrs. This works like a power chizel, (think of a small jackhammer), and carves as you apply the blade to the wood. More pressure it cuts harder.

Lots of options for you, but try things first before you invest, power carving tools are just a different tool to use, check out the edged tool first and well, and find something that fits your hand comfortably. Your trip to Woodn Feathers should be a real learning experience. Ask them if there is a club handy. Perhaps they even give lessons.

Gord mentioned the college show...great idea, good school too. You may hook up with a club through them too. Can't beat a "mentor" if you can find one, someone who has been carving a while and can sit down with you from time to time and teach you. Of course, we here on the board are always happy to help you along too.

Good luck today,

Bob
