Default New Canadian Kid on the block

Hello to all. Just found this site the other day and am happy to be here. I live in Dunnville Ontario Canada,(on the banks of the Grand River) the wife and I fish daily for carp (we return them all to the water).
I have worked with wood in one form or another for 60 odd years, most recently did some pyrography, but find it a little slow for me. I'm really wanting to try my hand at wood carving, speciffically SPIRITS.
s at this point...I have access to some old cedar rails, would these be suitable to use for spirit carving?
Secondly, are there any GREAT books available with step by step instructions on how to go about this wonderful medium?
Appreciate your feed back, thanks
Tucker

Thumbs up Re: New Canadian Kid on the block

Welccome Tucker1031
You will find this to be a very friendly helpful place,Iwish I had found thisplace a long time ago (just jioned last month) I too have worked with wood most of my life, carved since 1990. nuf about me,lol.
you asked about cedar rails , yes they will work for spirits if they are in good shape ( solid and not split to bad ) and to answer your other question about books , there are several on the market and Chipping Away in Kitchener ( whick is just down the road from you I believe ) has them all. If you click on their web site under books you will find them all listed .
Hope this helps you
Al

well gang, looks like I found the right site for sure. You sound like a great group. I have ordered three books and am hoping to get started real soon on trying my luck with the wood spirite. If any luck at all, I'll post some pix. Still have a lot of momma work to finish in the yard before old man winter sets in.
