The suggestion, of course, comes from one of those who doesn't wear a carving glove--and has trouble remembering to put on even a thumbguard! I was always taught to keep your fingers away from the edge...not that I can...but I can't get used to a glove! If I have to exert a lot of pressure on a carving--I just clamp it. Otherwise, I don't cut towards my holding hand...

Hi Ron and welcome.
You've found a wonderful group of folks here I look
forward to seeing your work. Don't feel you have to wait to post pictures. You only have to look through the forums to see how encouraging everyone is, and how simple suggestions can help someone make significant improvements on their work.
I know I've benefitted from the comments tremendously..

You Folks got me brainstorming, maybe something like this would work:

Handles could have sets of ribs or bands going around them.

The first set of bands could represent curvature of the blade...three bands through 11 bands.

The second set of bands could represent width of the blade. It could be one band with breaks in the band showing the width of the blade between the breaks.

Chisels could just have the second band and not the first group of bands for curvature (gouges).

Maybe something like this would help.

Wade

Hi Ron...I have the first carving glove I bought when started carving and its still in good shape...except dirty lol. My wife bought one that was just kevlar, mine is kevlar and stainless and I liked the idea of stainless so....I found a glove on www.warrencutlery.com an Excalibur stainless steel glove for 8.95...best price I could find anywhere, the glove I have that I have been using is 19.95 about everywhere and my wifes glove, the kevlar one I think was 6.00....hope that helps....I will bet if you contact Rick on this board or at Little Shavers....he can steer you in the right direction....Dave

You could use a veiner to cut the bands for gouges and a V to cut the bands for V tools... This might be a quick way to separate V from Round Bottom
