Welcome to the WCI Board, I sugest you find books. I have learned greatly from books but they don't come close to another carver, so look for local carvers or just ask questions on here.

Jonbyinibiza, there are books on found wood that you mnight look into. They cover driftwood.

Jack, search the gallery for "wood spirit". There are lots of them. They are the old bearded faces in bark and sticks.

Hi jon
I do alot of found wood lately, The longest part of working with it is the clearing of dead wood, once cleaned it usually shows me what was hiding, but you do sometimes have to look beyond the surface.

Hello and welcome. Get me! welcoming a new member! I only joined last night but the gang have made me feel so much at home.

As to advice, you should find out what your poison is, carving wise. there are several avenues: hand-held, using knives principally; held in a workholder and using gouges and a mallet; chip carving, the list goes on. My own preference is for the gouge and mallet flavour.

Chris Pye has written a number of books and is a very good teacher, very clear and thorough. From Guild of Master Craftsman Publications on Amazon.

Good luck and enjoy above all,

Richard Douglas

Welcome jonboy. Now you are hooked, source of wood, tools in hand, friends to share with and time to do stuff. Look forward to seeing your driftwood pieces.
