Red face New to this - 2 questions

Hi everyone I'm totally new to this method of communicating - never had a need of it before. I currently have two issues:

1. I remember reading something on carving a feather and burning the details on it. Anybody know where I can get info on such.

2. I'm looking for how to build a wooden book and a method of binding (without hardware) which will allow the pages to fully open out flat. I would also like some method of locking the book again, without using hardwood. I know this is a loaded issue. Does anyone have any ideas - I'm going bananas researching this....

Thanks

Welcome to the WCI Forum BG! Sorry I can't help answer your questions, but I'm sure it won't be long before one or two of the more experienced carvers come up with an answer to your questions...seem like quite a challenge but one with rewards too... Keep us posted on your progress for sure! Again welcome aboard and safe carving to you.

Hi BG, and welcome. You have me intrigued- I have never seen a bool like you mention. Do you have a pic of such a thing? it's the 'without hardware' part that makes it difficult.....

I have some ideas for the hinges but I have to get some way of binding the paper so it will open flat. The lock, well that's another story - still searching and open to any and all suggestions.

Thanks for your reply

There is a Native American artist whose works are in the Smithsonian . I have worked with him in several art/demonstration shows. He made fantastic feathers carved of leather and some of wood. His Name is Dan Townsend and can be reached through the native american museum at the Smithsonian. He is the kind of fellow who is always willing to share knowledge. If you can get in touch with him, he would be happy to help. He also has a working studio near Monticello Fl. tell him don schneider sent you! good carving don s.

Hello bgpowell,
I hope you have explored the forum. There is a wealth of info on here in the different sections. Regarding the feather question, there is a section on animal and bird carving and also a section on woodburning, both with literally tons of info. Grab a big cup of coffee and start reading.

Welcome to the forum. I know you will find answers to your questions here.
