| | Re: mr.sticks I'd suggest a Dremel tool with some good smalle carbide bits and plunge cut them.

| | Re: mr.sticks Welcome Mr Sticks, Glad you're here. I'v made lots of morrel mushroom sticks, from everything from basswood to ash and hickory. I have always dipped the carved morrel into stain. I usually use walnut stain, and make sure it gets into the crevises. If I want a darker mushroom I leave the stain on longer. Lighter, wipe it off right away. After letting it dry, I use Johnsons paste floor wax. Good luck...

| | Re: mr.sticks Hi 'mr. sticks' and welcome. I haven't carved any walking sticks or canes yet, but it looks like Ash has a good technique. Looking good Ash!
Actually I have two aspen walking sticks stripped, just need some time to work on them. LOL

I've worked on a few diamond willow, given to me by a friend in Canada. He has always removed the bark, but the sticks need to dry out for a couple of weeks to a couple of months. Otherwise, they might develop cracks/splits. I have one that I'm working on even though it split. I just used wood filler to fill the gaps. You can see a couple of my sticks on my site. |
