Default merry christmas from the u. p. of michigan

hello been browsing here for about a year finally joined. i do a little carving when i get time mostly relief carving. i only carve a couple projects a year but do enjoy it. i am a logger by trade and after running a chainsaw all day managing the business at night helping my wife homeschool our 3 young children i find it hard to carve. i enjoy looking at everyones carvings here and hope to get inspired to do a little more. i use the swiss made carving tools and have turned my own mallets on my wood lathe. i also cut my own wood one of the nice things of being a logger. i own a wood mizer sawmill and enjoy cutting the carving blocks. well merry christmas every one and look forward to being part of this group.

Welcome, Curly Maple,
Glad you've joined us. Lots to be learned about carving here and lots of good people who are only too glad to share everything they've learned.

I would agree that working long days and nights sure cuts into carving time, but sometimes life just turns out that way. Eventually it swings back--noting is more important than earning a living and raising kids. In a blink of an eye--they'll be grown.

Good to have you here.

Welcome Curly. Glad you decided to join us. I too used to be in the wood business and spent 23 years as a procurement forester. I built up a good supply of tupelo carving wood during those years and since retiring have lost most of my contacts with loggers but still have a good bit of wood left. Let us see some of your work soon.

Hey Curly, another welcome from a part time Yooper. Born in the Iron Rivr Area but I now spend the winters in the sunny south.
I've been told by some folks that they can tell a Curly Maple and a Birdseye Maple tree by looking at the first 6' of the trunk. Can you, or is all hogwash?
Are you able to log much during the winter months with snow on the ground??

Hello and welcome. Sounds like your plate is full, but you can't go wrong finding a little time to carve. Hope you will share some of your work with us.

bbeery birdseye maple will sometimes have a cokebottle shaped butt although not always and sometimes you can see the dimples in the bark but not always. after the tree is on the ground you can see the rays leading to the center of the heart like spokes on a wheel. if the bark gets knocked off you can see the dimples in the wood.

curly maple you have to knock the bark ooff or the wedge of wood that comes from the notch you bust it in half and find the curl by the way my favorite wood is curly maple.

mottles ill have to have my wife do some pics im not very computer literate.

thanks for the welcome everybody and yes ive noticed other yoopers on here but then theres not a lot else to do up here

i also have other hobbies after the first of the year i have a model a coupe with a rumble seat in it well i have the engine torn apart and have to get it back together so ill be a month on that project off and on. i do have a couple projects planned for winter keep you informed.
