I recommend you check with Fox Publishing for a good instruction book, which will give you a list of supplies needed http://www.foxchapelpublishing.com/s...cfm?FullCat=34
As for where to purchase supplies www.treeline.com comes to mind I know I've seen walking stick and cane supplies there. Also there are other's www.woodcraft.com or just do a Google search with the words walking stick, cane supplies.
Others, will have good suggestions for you also.

| | Re: How to make canes You don't really need to buy "supplies" to make a cane, get a stick you like, carve a handle of the shape and size you prefer and either mount the handle with 1/2 section of dowel or an anchor bolt. |

| | Re: How to make canes Half the fun of cne making for me is FINDING great material to work with. A walk in the woods, summer or winter, can turn up some amazing sticks to use. Check along roadside cuts, cliff sides, or recent clear cuts. These areas will turn up sticks with crooks for handles, exposed roots that will make good handles, and even, if you are lucky, some twisty sticks in the recent clear cuts.
If you find a sapling with an exposed root section, dig that out.....you might find the perefect cane already bent and ready to carve. Some of these take a bit of work to get the handle down to size, but that why they call it CARVING!
Or maybe you'd be more interested in carving walking sticks......easy selection there. Birch, maple, aspen, alder or diamond willow saplings will provide all the material you need for these.

I can use my Aspen, but wondered if there is a supplier for wooden sticks that have been machined for canes. I have ordered a cane kit from Treeline, but wanted more information for wood. Dick |

| | Re: How to make canes I've made walking sticks from Holly, Mt. Laurel, Hickory, and Locust limbs. All found wood. I have a rather large supply of Mt. Laurel if anyone is interested. It will still have the bark on it, but will have the ends sealed with Anchorseal. I have them anywhere from 1" up to about 5" in diameter and up to about 18" in length.

| | Re: How to make canes Hi Mike,
I am not familiar with Mt. Laurel. I use Basswood and Aspen. I will probably order some wood from you when I have my plan ready to carve canes. Thanks Mike |

Mountain Laurel is a very hard, dense wood, white or pale cream in color. The bark is dark brown, thin and flaky. It holds detail very well, especially if you're a good carver, which I'm not.
I'm a carpenter/builder by trade so the wood is free for me. When ever we clear a house site, I keep all the Mt. Laurel and any good sticks of other hardwoods we cut down. I think I have a few Sassafras sticks and some "cucumber tree" sticks as well as others I've forgotten the species of. I wouldn't even know how much to charge for the wood. What I've done before is just do some trading.
