| | I'm new, I'm new, I don't know what to do. just kidding Hi, I was just looking to ask someone what kind of wood is best for carving on and I found this site and joined.
I can see that this carving thing could be very interresting. I'm an artist, meaning I draw on paper. Well, I started dabbling into carving some things on wood and found that I like it. I know that you are artists also, I just never considered myself as a carver, but I kinda like it.
If I could find the right wood, I think things might go a little easier on me. I'll bet you've never heard the "what kind of wood?" question before. Right now I'm using Poplar (spell?) If there were an easier way I would sure like to know what it is.

I have used poplar so far and I thought it was soft but that hasn't been the case. It seems to be soft in some areas and hard in others making it difficult to finish them in a timely manner.
I've only done four so far and my fourth one is comng along well as far as I'm concerned.

| | Re: I'm new, I'm new, I don't know what to do. just kidding Hi Blindmember, I'm new also. Like everyone says, Basswood is the way to go. But, I also use a lot of Mountain Laurel to carve on as well as Holly. They are very hard woods, but hold detail very well. Of course your tools have to be very sharp. If I can figure out how to post pics, I'll post some pics of my amateurish carvings.
