Default Lurker comes out of the shadows

Greetings
I guess the time has arrived to introduce myself. I have spent most of time doing woodworking with occasional carving/whittling. I have recently turned more to the carving side as a result of a handicap from an injury and age. I live in the East Texas piney woods area. I can not locate any carving clubs closer than a 100 miles but would like to be in one. I have carved a few lovespoons and some small animals. I have been impressed with the help that other carvers openly offer and the friendliness of all the carvers.
Bill

Welcome Bill. I lived in east TX when I started carving about 2 years ago. And you are right....there aren't any clubs that are close. That's why I have such a big collection of carving books.....everything I learned came from a book and these fine people on the forum.

Bill .. Welcome ... I live in southeast Texas and the closes carving clubs I know of your way are in Tyler Texas .. They have a big show every year and I know thats too far for clubs .. but try to make the show when possible ..

Also Bill .. dont forget the Texas Woodcarvers Guild that involves all carvers from Texas ...They have two big shows yearly and classes galore during this time ..

Welcome

Gene

Welcome,
Good to have you join us. Sorry you don't have a carving club close to you cause that's a good way to get help. Have you tried http://www.woodburning.com/carving.asp#TX to see if there's any other club closer than 100 miles?

From time to time I drive 100-150 miles for an all day carving session with another club. It's worth the drive just to get quality carving time with fellow carvers--and make new friends to boot!

MA, burning and carving is not the same as playing with matches and knives.

Thanks for all of the warm welcome words. There is a carving show in Tyler next weekend, Nov. 9-10, which I hope to attend if I can. I had planned on going to one in Amarillo on my way to visit my son in Denver, CO, but think I will probably have cancel that trip.
The old fickle finger of fate has been interfering with my plans frequently of late.
