Just joined. Hello to everyone. Looks like a great site! Just a beginner. Been using tools around the house such as Dremel, any kind of knife, and definitely a lot of sandpaper! Like to carve figures such as small animals, fish decoys and lures, mermaids. Would like to purchase set of real carving tools. Don't want to spend my limited money foolishly on tools I may or may not use. Is there a good brand I should be looking for, especially for very small faces? Also, chisels, gouges, knives, what?? (Just please don't say more sandpaper...) Thanks for any input you can give, Chuck

Welcome to the forums Chuck. You can do some more investigating on tools, but my advice is to start with the Little Shavers beginners kit. A nice little set of tools for a VERY reasonable price. One advantage is that these tools come pre-sharpened, and if you're not up to the task, Rick will re-sharpen them for free. Beginner's Carving Set at Little Shavers |

Do a search on "recommended tools" and you'll get quite a few threads. You can add "beginner" to the search and narrow it down a bit more.

Hi Chuck, about sand papper. HEHE, just kidding. there is so many great tools out there. my advise is do some resurch on tools. read the different threads hear and go to the links they offer. if your like me, you'll buy all the knifes, and all the chisels and gouges. and sharping tools . and find what your using now is just as good. there is some high dollor tools out there that are the best. for me it would be. Henry Taylor, Ashley Illes, pfeil, Stubai, flexcut. some sharping stones like Arkansas. knifes like lee ferganson. and dennys. but you would have to do your own searching. and read the post to see what you like for your self. heck learn how to make your own. that is fun. Your choices are many. I like the flexcut tools for small carvings I especially like their scorps. They are reasonable priced and hold an edge. I am now and have always been a Henry Taylor guy but they are not cheep.
