| | Just wanted to introduce myself Hi, my name is Tony I just found this forum and wanted to introduce myself and give a little background about me and my carvings. Some of my carvings can be seen here on WebShots.com http://community.webshots.com/user/Pugliese110 I got interested in carving in 92 and started with some Tom Wolfe Santa carvings and his four golfers. Next came the decoy phase, from 93-96. My wife was getting tired of the ducks and wanted something different in the house so I tried my hand at a more natural finish carving. In 97 I completed the horse head carving in Butternut from a book by Ian Norbury. I really enjoyed working in the Butternut and the natural beauty in the grain opened a new fascination in carving for me. Unfortunately after 97 things changed and I lost interest in carving do to work and other family commitments. I work for a Monument company as a memorial graphic designer and around 2000 I was asked to do some repair work on a couple marble statues that had been vandalized, which was very interesting. Those pics are also on WebShots. When I was approached about doing the repairs I really wasn’t sure how I would do it but I figured if I could build up the missing material I knew I could carve it. The last thing I carved was in 02. A small decoy company near where I live was experimenting with making vacuum formed Canadian goose decoys. They asked me to carve just the body with exaggerated feathers IOW thick with sharp edges so they could try to make the metal master mold. That was my first attempt at actually creating a working pattern and laminating enough material together to carve the body. 40lbs of wood produced a 12lb finished piece. …anyway all that said, this is a great forum and the work I’ve seen here has inspired me to get out the tools again. Some time ago I was given a large Cedar burl that I want to try carving a Green Man in. I just ordered a couple books on the subject so I’ll try to figure out how to post pics in the WIP section. I’ve never belonged to a carving club so it will be nice to get some feedback and help on WIP. |
