Default Introduction

Hello all. I'm brand new to carving, and just wanted to say hi. I've done some whittling in the past, mostly spoons and letter openers. I did carve one ball in cage completely by hand. That was 2 weeks of torture

Rick at Little Shavers is setting me up with a beginner's kit, a book, and a modified Kershaw Double Cross. I would like to some day start carving Santas, charactures, wood spirits, etc... My wife has volunteered to paint whatever I carve.

I'll be looking for mentorship, advice, and critiques as I (hopefully) get better at carving, so I thought I would take this opportunity to introduce myself.

I'm born and raised in Chicago, IL. I'm an avid hiker/camper who loves being outdoors. My whittling started as a past time around the camp fire. I enjoy most creative outlets, and therefore play a wide range of musical instruments. I'm hoping that wood carving provides me yet another outlet, as well as an escape and a pleasent passtime.

I look forward to meeting everyone.

Nosh

Hi Nosh: You've found a great website for beginning carvers. Do explore and look into all the different areas available. Lots of talent here just waiting to help newcomers. If you have a question, jut post it... someone will come to your aid.
Again, welcome!

Hi Nosh,

Welcome! Since you've already whittled some, you're well on your way. You already know how to handle a knife and the whittling has probably prepared you for understanding grain direction.

Good luck and enjoy the process.
