Default Howdy and need your help

I want to say hi to everybody. This is my first time on the forum, although I have seen the sight on several occassions trying to find an answer to a question I currently have. Just so you get to know me a little. I am currently living in deep South Texas. I just had my 48th birthday and have been carving mostly as a novice off and on now for about 10 years. I enjoy caricatures and some relief carving, mostly caricatures.

I do need some help if anyone can provide it on the question of where can I find a particular brand of gouge and carving knife. A few years back I took some carving lessons from an older gentleman, Joe Welnack, and his wife, Vickie Welnack. I happen to buy a knife and gouge which I am assuming is the type pictured in their Basic woodcarving book and go by the name of "BO - T KNIVES". They seem to be unique in that the handles seem to be made of different layered pieces of wood which are of different colors. The ones I bought are made of #63 Rockwell Hardened Tool Steel and are very sturdy. My big problem is that I cannot find anyone who knows anything about this brand of carving tool. I spoke to Vickie, but she has lost touch with her supplier ever since Joe past away. If anyone has any idea where this type of gouge or knife can be located or who I can call, please don't hesitate to reply to this request. Thanks in advance.

Hi Chief,
those handles are not all that unusual. Lots of knife makers use the layered wood for handles. But I confess I have never seen that type of tool before...the gouges that is. If they were from an individual, unfortunately folks come and go. The person who used to make them, might not be around anymore. You might contact Rick at Little Shavers ( www.littleshavers.com ) and see if he has anything like that. Rick does stock used tools as well as new ones. Good luck in your search. Maybe someone on here will have the tools or know where some can be found.

Nice gouges.

Not sure the gouges are Bo- T but they made have been specials. They are if I remember correctly, bull nose chisels, used mostly in relief carving. Offset to get your hand up and allowing for the chisel to get down into the carving. bullnose refers to the style. of the cutting edge. Great for clearing out along an edge.

Welcome to the site.
