Default Holland here :-)

Hi there all.

First of all a great thanks to anyone who has taken the affort to make an instruction video, typed some info, placed some pics about carving.
I truly enjoy this site verry much.
I`m sorry if my English isn`t all that. Maybe just a little rusty, lol.

Well,i`m Dries (try and pronounce that!,lol, you`ll probably say something like "Dreeze",lol) and i live in Holland, also known as The Netherlands ofcourse.
Just started out with carving and have a real nice cut in my thumb to prove that, lol. It was just a stupid mistake, that`s all, luckily i had some protection, but it went right through it! I used a leather thumb from an old glove, put two of these together and you have somekind of el cheapo protection. well it was at least that cheap, that it went in like crazy. (it was a pelikan knife)
The wound was open for weeks and i (ofcourse) did not bother to go to hospital and get it stitched up.
So now i have new thumbs, made from leather ofcourse, but made from the sleeves of (yes yes!) welding gloves! And man it works! It was hell to make them, the friendly girl said to me (chapeau Maja and a big thanks again!). But hey they work, and this was realy "El Super Cheapo". I didn`t pay anything for the gloves and did not pay anything to get them made, lol!

I try to make something, although it`s tough for me. Well lets say i`m a littlebit challenged, in the form of a double broken spine. Try and immitate that, lol.
But i whittle (you call it whittling is`nt it?,carve/carving is the same?) some and try to make bird houses.
But also little carvings like in the scandinavian style(little dolls and trolls, lol),or an animal. All verry simplistic because we just started out,but it`s a whole lot of fun, that`s for sure!
I also own ,a lathe you call it i think. And that`s fun too,but a little hard for me. So i whittle, punch in nails, screw here and there and play with paint, lol

Kind regards Dries

Good morning to you all :-)

Many many thanks to the kind words and welcome`s here.
I`m sure i will like it a lot here. I already found a whole lot of stuff that is verry verry interesting. Like for instance, working with a wetstone.
Real fun this incredibly difficult technique, but hey i`m comming there,i have a sharp knife (eurhm...after two months!) and still i think it can be better and will be! That`s for sure. It doesn`t leave me alone, and i keep thinking about it ,how can i improve this or that.
Nice,it`s fun this new carving hobby.

Bless all.
