Default hi, i'm kat and i'm a wood newbie

hi, my name is kat and I am wanting/trying to get into this whole wood carving thing. i would really like to make wood jewelry, but i'm getting ahead of myself since i don't really know that much about wood or carving. So, any help, advice, or words of wisdom would be greatly appreciated. also it would be great to hear from anyone who knows of places i can get supplies and take classes in the l.a. area. I only have a dremel right now and am not even sure that is what i need or is enough to start out with, oh yeah and of course i need wood!!!! i hope to meet some cool people and be able to make a thing or two, or just a thing to start out with:-) thanks and i can't wait to get started!!!!

Greetings and welcome, Kat,
It is hard to give advise in general. When you get ready to try something specific, just log on here and ask for help and a multitude of carvers will answer you back. There is a huge variety of different carving styles and types on here. No matter what you are doing, someone has advise for you.
Good luck.

:::WELCOME KAT:::: oh yea kinda be thinking would you would like to carve and Im sure tons of people here will have some great ideas for you. Cut some small wooden disc {1 inch or 2 inch circles}from a tree branch, sand off the bark with your dremel{sanding drums} Which you can buy at Walmart plus a few Dremel bits{cutting bits} Carve some designs in them, then paint them, make some ear rings, pins, etc. Since you like wooden jewelry! Just a quick thought...Welcome again....TnArtist

Hi Kat! Welcome to the family. Check out the books to get some ideas or do as I do----- just start right in and listen to the wood. I find the Dremel very nice and easy to use. Lowes also has a nice selection of Dremel bits. Its a bit cheeper to purchase them in a multi- kit and then its nice and easy to store in your Dremel bag. If you carve mostly by power check out the power carving section of the forum.
