Hey Travis, welcome to the forum! If you'll take a look in the Wood Carving Tutorials section, you'll find a number of figure carvings for beginners that you can try. Gene Messer has a number of them in there, with the photos of each step or youtube videos to go along with them. Hope that helps!

As far as red cedar goes, I haven't tried it personally, but I know a few others have. I'm sure you'll get a reply on that, or you can also try the Search link at the top beside New s and search for red cedar to see what comes back.

Stephen

Welcome to the forum Travis,If you look at the left of the page in the green section you will see pattern and videos both have some caricature and as Stephen said the tutorial section. I have not had a lot of experience with red cedar but if I remember correctly it carved fairly well but had a tendency to splinter so I could only take small cuts

Welcome to the Forum. I just noticed this morning that Gene Messer is currently doing a tutorial carving a flat plane little old man from a block of wood. He is doing it to show people what to do if they don't have a bandsaw. You should check his videos out. Whittler0507
Gene is a member here and loves to teach. If you have a problem with something you can get help from anyone here but Gene would probably love to hear from you.

Allen Goodman's video "Carve an Indian From a Block" is one of the best I've seen on how to work a block of wood down with hand tools. Sold at carvingvideos.com. Some good advice there on the kinds of tools you might want for efficient roughing out.

I've a band saw I have n't used for a few years. I've found that for cutting out a good jigsaw with a long blade does the job for me.

I've alose made straight cuts into the pattern and chiselled the wood.
Now can I say clearly I'm not suggesting these are better than using a band saw just an alternative. A lot of carvers do n't have a band saw.
