Hello Everyone, Mike here. Started carving 'bout 6 months or so ago and truely love it. Started as sort-ofa whim and grown from there. Still carving that good ole soft basswood and hope to graduate soon to a harder wood. Did carve some aspen and walnut, in little amounts. Aspen is nice, but green walnut is too much for me. Heck you folks know this. I am a disabled (two back surgeries) outdoorsman. I still enjoy limited hunting, fishing, bird watching and feeding, ham radio, and of course carving. My home is in central or the piedmont area of NC. Carving has (in my mind anyway) connected me with our ancesters. Especially the ones who lived without power. I now understand the relaxation of, after a good days work, sitting under the shade tree and whitling a piece of wood and allowing the hidden object to appear. Gods blessings to all. Good bye for now.

Hello Mike, welcome to the forum. Couldn't agree more about how relaxing it is to carve. My mind just wanders off to another place entirely when I get to a certain point in my carving. Hope you enjoy all there is on offer here. Joe.

So far I have carved three elephants, a bear, two hummingbirds, two girl softball players, a parakeet, and six spoons. Not reliefs. The spoons are the whim wherein I got my start. My neice asked for wooden spoons for her birthday, so I carved them for her for a joke. She loved them. I guess that would be chip? I just carve or whittle. I forgot the dozen wood sprit faces in aspen butternut and basswood. Last edited by mps9653; 05-15-2010 at 09:00 PM. Reason: addition |

Welome to the group, hope you enjoy carving. Sounds like you might be a good candidate for wildlife carving, there is an excellent section on the forum devoted to this aspect of our hobby. Hope the carving helps ease the problems associated with your disability, I know it sure does help me pass the time now that I can no longer work as well. have fun and show us some of your work.
