Welcome to the WCI Forum Al! Hope you enjoy the forum; lot's of great info and carvers here... What kind of wood carving do you enjoy (i.e.; relief, caracature, flat plane, sticks/canes, etc.)? Let us know a little more about yourself and if you've carved anything, post a few photos and share them with us... we'd love to see them! Again, welcome aboard and wish you safe carving!
Kenn

Hi Folks,

I appreciate the warm welcome. You all have a very nice neighborhood here. I thought I'd show you my first project (humble as it is). It started out with a Rapid River knife my wife bought me for my birthday. I was told the blade is 154cm steel and that it would hold an edge. Well, then I found a exceptionally nice chunk of pine 2X4 and decided I'd give the knife's edge a try.
As it turns out, my granddaughter was upset that her killer whale figurine didn't have a baby. So began sketching out a 4" baby killer whale on the 2X4. 10 minutes on the band saw at work and I was whittling by lunch time. I roughed it out using the three knives below - Man it took a long time. I know, not choice set of tools - for this job anyway. After roughing it in, I used a dremmel and sandpaper, then painted it by brush using acrylics.
Well, that’s what sparked my interest to look further into carving. Then I found your site and all you neat people.
I'm probably going to order the beginner pack from "little shavers". I read up some on Murphy's knives and was glad to here they use 1095 high carbon steel - And Rick puts a real naughty sharp edge on them. I would love to eventually add some of Denny's blades too as I like the "01" steel he uses and have heard good stuff about his knives.
I look forward to learning from you all!!

God Bless!!!
Al B.

Hi Al!

I too am a Michigander. Mid Michigan area. Midland to be exact. Been skiing in Cadillac way too long ago when I still had some sort of coordination.

Welcome to this awesome forum! These folks are more than willing to help you out with anything you want to learn.
