Smile Hi from Downunder

Just joined this forum. I guess I am a bit of an intruder not being a woodcarver as such but a lover of wood and working with it. I like building practical things like Computer stations and bookcases mostly in solid wood.
I live in an area of native Jarrah, Tuart and Sheoak (which are my favorite woods to work with) forest and our small property has all these species growing.
What am I doing on a Woodcarving website. Well I googled the "scary sharpening system" and this website came up with a tutorial and here I am.
But crickey I am reading all this other interesting stuff and haven't got to the tutorial yet. Well thats about me except to say what an interesting place.

Hello Busso,

There'sno such thing as an intruder here, especially since you love wood. Who knows, you might want to add somenice relief carvings to one of your book cases. Check out some of the posts and you'll see what I mean. Anyway, it's a nice feeling to be able to chat with someone thousands of miles away in the dead of winter when it's summer here.

im definetely not a furniture maker-- but have teamed up with one and now product custom cabinet fronts. mostly religious because that is what he promotes. crosses, nativities and christ. make for unique products and it pays well-- each art form has its own ideas-- and a new idea always is welcome.

GDay Mate;
I just joined this site myself and I agree, there is a lot to check out here. Like they said, it don't matter what you do as long as you have a love for wood. I do carving, whittling, turning,crafting and an occasional piece of furniture.
So Welcome to you from a fellow newbe. Ray
P.S. Sure wish I had the wood source you have.

Yes squbrigg I have made a coffee table. My phylosophy is keep it simple. I used two cross arms with simple halving joint. The 4 ends sat in square legs with an open tenon joint (closed is ok but a lot harder). Everthing was just glued.
On top sat a round glass top supported on the arms with little rubber stops. The glass being heavy just sits there with no other fixing. You need a particularly nice wood because it is displayed through the glass top. I used Jarrah sometimes known abroad as Australian mahogany .

Busso, Welcome to this forum/board. I'll make a little wager! After participating in this group, and seeing what can be done in wood carving, you'll want to try it out. Many a piece of furniture, has been enhansed by carving, as well as many carvings are enhansed by the piece of furniture.

I occassionally make benches for a retail shop. The shop buys them to display other stuff on, but end up selling the benches too. These benches were a traditional 5 or 6 board county style benches, that sold for $49. One day I carved a small wood spirit on the corner of one leg. The store raised the price to $89. Benches with carvings on them is all they want now.

Give it a try, you'll like it!

Busso,

, sounds similar to what I had in mind, though Jarrah wood is hard to come by around here, I plan to use Black Walnut. Solid top planned on mine though. amd plan to do some carving on the legs, not sure what yet.
