Thanks for all the feedback.

I was really nervous about posting since, from what I’ve seen, everyone on the forum does such beautiful carvings.

I have a similar opinion to Lightningbolt and believe that turning is nothing more than carving, except that the work is rotated and you have to use turning chisels as opposed to carving chisels, since they are made differently.

In fact the lathes only purpose fundamentally is to allow the user to carve in the round, which does limit the artistic designs, hence the reason I started enhancing the pieces with carving.

I already have some ideas for future pieces that involve even more carving and it’s really opened up a whole world of possibilities.

As to the lacework on the turnings, firstly you have to ensure the wood is of an even thickness and reasonably thin. It’s just a case of then carving each hole in turn, which I do with a small powered hand drill/router. It is considerably time consuming and on a particularly large piece I can end up carving nothing but holes for days.

When carving the random lacework pattern I do it all by eye and just have to try to concentrate on keeping an even spacing between each hole. Also when you get right the way round the item you need to take extra care carving the holes that join back in with the first few, otherwise you can end up with too large or too small a hole and completely ruin the effect.

The other difficulty with carving the holes in particular is that there is no room for error and if you carve the last couple of holes wrong on a globe with hundreds of them then you can ruin the whole piece.

When carving the bowls with various other carved patterns round the rims I do mark them out in pencil first to ensure the pattern is carved evenly.

I hope I explained it all well enough but if you’ve got any more questions I’d be happy to have a go at answering them.

Yvonne

Yvonne,
The daughter (son-in-law & grand daughter) are in Carshalton, Surrey and we miss her dearly. Would you lean out the window and yell, "Hallooooo Becky" for me.

Mike in New York State

... and I love your work as well.
