Default Hi All I just want to introduce myself

I am a new member to these forums. My name is Rob Jerrott I live in Nova Scotia Canada. I have been carving on & off since the early 90's. Now that I have kids etc though I don't have as much time to dedicate to carving as in the old days. I like to do mostly relief carving of some forum or another & I am always looking for inspiration. It seems you guys have a nice community here and I look forward to contributing to it.

Thanks fo having me

R

Hello Rob,

I just joined this site last week and believe it or not, I'm only an hour and half from where you live - New Glasgow, NS. The members in this forum are a wealth of knowledge and very supportive to newbie's like myself. I'm a student of Keith and Ann's Carving Studio in Pictou. Welcome aboard.

Thats great Irishman I have been carving for a long time and have met very few people who are into it(including my wife) it is a little lonely.

PS, I saw the pics of your woodspirits walking sticks etc. they are looking good!

Hey Rob, welcome. When you get a chance, post some pics of your work. I'm sure you will be inspired by some of the work of the members but seeing some work by new members like you can be inspiring too.

Chuck

Ok, first of all I hope the images I attached end up attached I am a little bit of a newb at forums etc.

This is a carving I did from a sketch I made of the picture on the cover of a novel I was reading back then. It is in Basswood of 2"x9"x15". I gave it to my father in law for Christmas that year and he hung it in a corner of his summer cottage where nobody ever gets a good look at it. He gets a shirt every year now. That also explains the dust etc that may show up in the images. This guy actually was accepted into a local university art gallery opening (for local artists craftspeople) after they recieved a big donation of some sort. He is probably my best piece, I do much simpler things now due to lack of time.

I would love to hear some comments & critcism etc. My biggest one now that I look at him is I should have used a bigger piece of wood and continued the wing up the right side.

Welcome aboard we are sure getting an influx of Canadains on this board nice to have you along. Love your work the eagle is great. You know hind site is great and probably the wing on the other side would have been nice but I see no problem with the carving the way it is.

Welcome and thanks for sharing the wonderful eagle relief. I agree anyone that puts this in a place other than one that calls attention to it should get a shirt instead!

I think the balance on this piece is great. I like the way the wings extend beyond the edge of the rest of the carving.

You asked for critique and I have only one thing to point out and I only noticed it on the close up of the head. Probably the only reason I saw it is that one of my friends who specializes in relief constantly points it out in my carvings. If you look at the bottom of your mountains the sea disappears under them rather than the land disappearing into the sea. A small thing that in no way takes away from this carving. I love it!!

Thanks for the kind words guys. As for the water & the mountains I agree with your comment Paul. I first tried to blend the mountains into the water but then you couldn't tell where the water ended and the mountain began. I have not tried anything like it since.
