Default Hi All

I've never carved anything before. I saw a book by Rick Butz and decided to do it. I'm interested in doing carving in the round, relief carving, and chip carving. The first thing I'm working on is a relief carving in a knife block for my sister inlaw. I want to do some celtic knot work on it and carve her portrait from a old photo. I'd also like to carve a horse profile from another photo in the sides. I know this is a big step to do and I will be working my way up to that by practicing on other scraps of wood. I'm starting with the knot work and I have some questions. How small a knot work can be carved? I want to carve a 1/4" border to leave space for the portrait. Is that going to be two small? And what sweep and size of chisel should I use to make the round bead? I have a selection of Pfeil chisels based on Rick Butz's book but I think these may be too big for this particular task.

Thanks
Chris

Welcome Chris, sounds like you have the fire and I'm sure you'll do well. I carve relief, in the round and pyrography. Unfortunately, I can't help you with the knot question as I haven't carved any. I can, tell you though that someone will see your thread and help. Keep watching the 'Relief & Chip Carving Forum.'

Welcome to the forum. I do a little different style than you are looking at, but I agree with Mottles, someone will be able to help you.

Again, welcome I hop to see some of your work in the future.

p.s. I use Pfeil tools, I love them.

Welcome Chris,
I know the hooked feeling I got started by watching Rick Butz carving show that used to run on PBS, he's not a bad carver to start learning from. I'm sure you'll enjoy it here!
