Ash, You did it right. That's a very good start - well, 4th try. I like the design. Some of my early work in Cedar went into the closet - where it couldn't be seen! Cedar is a little tough for a beginner to do relief carving because it has a tendancy to splinter. Just keep your tools sharp and spend a little time on the background to make it "cleaner". I'm impressed - good job. Keep up the work and let us see your progress.

Good work on the dragon Ash.....nice design. You learn with each carving you do, so enjoy the fun. Practice, practice, practice. Carving is the best!!

Thanks guys! Will see about cleaning it up. I used only a knife on it, hope to get a starters carving set soon. ... still buttering up the wife .

Also did my first carving in black walnut! Fantastic wood to work with! Glad I saved that old walnut tree we cut 7 years ago. And a guy that I work with just cut down 2, seems I am getting them both! They should be dry before I finish the first.

Ashby,
Beautiful Dragon! Can hardly wait to see what you can do with a good set of tools! Check out rick-in-seattle's website. He's got the best and I believe at the best prices! AND he'll talk you through the selection process so you get what you need, not just start a collection of tools.

Well,
Looks like I convinced the wife. muhahaaa . I added a mountian background to the eagle and carved a walnut stand for it with a frontal head of an eagle on the base. I finished the base and set it to dry. Was very pleased with it. The information you gave was great and I kept it very clean.

I would give you a pic of it , but seems it grew legs and disapeared. Not sure who took it yet , but the list is getting shorter. LOL .
When I find it will try and get a pic of it finished .

Ash
