Well, I guess it had to happen sooner or later...I got the urge to carve recently, but I do remember whittling a bit as a kid some 50 years ago. I may be drawn to deep relief but don't know exactly why, except carving some whimsical things for the grandkids (1 1/2-8 years old) to put on walls entered my head recently. I've worked with my hands most of my life but am probably a bit more right sided than left, which may be a drawback. I saw some reliefs Scott O'Neill did on youtube the other day and found it interesting + amusing. Would you say relief is a good starting point, or would you recommend another beginning path? So much to do, so little time it seems at this point. : ) Thanks all for any insights and look forward to many lasting friendships...... wheezer |

Welcome to the WCI Board, I would take a look around and just take in some of the amazing talent and skill on here. If ya have any questions just ask, someone should know an answer and most likely you will get several. Carl

Hello and welcome, Relief is a great way to start carving. Coloring books and children's books are a great source of carving ideas. Have fun--the good thing about carving for grandkids is that they love everything you do! Donna T

Hello and welcome, wheezer. I don't know if there's a right way to get started, just do it but use a carving glove to protect your hands.
